Quantifying SETI

چکیده

It should come as no surprise to readers of QEX that the scientific Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI, sometimes called the search for the ultimate DX) was initiated by, and is still largely conducted by, radio amateurs. The world’s hams instinctively understand the nature of electromagnetic communications, as well as the nature of the “free space” (or “aether”) that fills the void between the stars, and forms a transmission medium for our favored photons. If asked to identify one radio amateur whose contributions to SETI were the most significant, I would not hesitate to name the late Dr Philip Morrison, W8FIS, the father of modern SETI science.1 Institute Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Phil Morrison was a distinguished theoretical astrophysicist, and a pioneer in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence through radio communication. He authored scores of books, produced countless television documentaries and lectured tirelessly around the world, despite the physical limitations imposed upon him by post-polio syndrome. Phil Morrison passed away quietly at his modest home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in April, 2005 at the age of 89; but not before inspiring a whole generation of scientists (including me) to ask the difficult questions and then attempt to answer them. It is to Phil Morrison’s memory that this article is dedicated, and it is with his most important publication that it deals.

SETI with SKA

SETI with SKA would be by far the most powerful SETI search ever undertaken, covering enough stars with enough sensitivity to probe significantly further towards those other Earth civilisations than previous ones. This paper discusses the rationale behind radio SETI searches, and explains why SKA will be such as big step forward and will make few demands on telescope time.

A Study on SETI@home Distributed Network

SETI@home is a widely recognized as one of the most successful implementations of distributed computing in science and industry today. Its success can be traced to an innovative application of distributed computing techniques that allows millions of volunteers worldwide to donate their desktop computers’ otherwise idle CPU time to the pursuit of science. The SETI@home solution creates processin...

Dynamics of neurons controlling movements of a locust hind leg. III. Extensor tibiae motor neurons.

Imposed movements of the apodeme of the femoral chordotonal organ (FeCO) of the locust hind leg elicit resistance reflexes in extensor and flexor tibiae motor neurons. The synaptic responses of the fast and slow extensor tibiae motor neurons (FETi and SETi, respectively) and the spike responses of SETi were analyzed with the use of the Wiener kernel white noise method to determine their respons...

Internet-based 'social sharing' as a new form of global production: The case of SETI@home

Benkler (‘Sharing Nicely’, Yale Law Journal, 2004, Vol. 114, pp. 273-358) has argued that ‘social sharing’ via Internet-based distributed computing is a new, so far under-appreciated modality of economic production. This paper presents results from an empirical study of SETI@home (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence), which is the classic example of such a computing project. The aim is...
